Liz McGowan

Chthon 5 (2020)

£745.00

Description
Khthon is one of several Greek words for ‘earth’;  it refers to that which is under the earth.  In English, ‘chthonic’ describes deities or spirits of the underworld.

For the past 18 months Liz has worked with saltmarsh mud - slick, liquid, shifting - exploring what it will do on paper.  At the same time this activity has linked in to a chthonic energy - raw, earthy - a planet in crisis meeting an inner, empathetic roar.

These works will be sold float mounted in box frames with natural wood surround and infinity glass.

Dimensions
Unframed size H 56cm x W 49cm - see example of framing in pictures

Materials

These works use saltmarsh mud, Hunstanton cliff, and coastal chalk and sand, in liquid form, to create mirroring patterns that link the above and the below, the land and the ribcage/lungs, as an expression of this roar, this earthy connection between the human and the more than human world.

More about Liz McGowan
Liz works with natural and found materials, creating responses to particular environments through installation, sculpture, drawing and conversation.  Her focus is the meeting point between inner and outer landscapes, where personal creativity is given inspiration and form by those elements – stone, reed, tree, earth, tideline – that combine to form a landscape
