Avant Gardeners: C&C at the Stables, Houghton Hall, Norfolk

Annie Turner makes ceramic sculpture that references the tidal cycle, the sea’s geological impact and natural processes that the River Deben brings to structures along its course and the Suffolk shoreline. Her work is grounded in the landscape she has experienced throughout her life. Born in Suffolk, Annie has included natural components in her work like fossilised shark teeth and other detritus she has picked up on coastal walks, close to where she grew up, lending a sense of the personal and locational specificity to the work.

There is an alchemical reaction that takes place on the application of glaze, that once fired gives her work texture and balance that encourages continuity in an object’s origin. Familial forms of Ladders, Sinkers, Drifters, Sluices, are steeped in a maritime rind that highlights the colour and complexity of her disarmingly open sculptural forms.
