Stephen Murfitt's influences are diverse and come from a fusion of visual elements seen in the natural and built environments. The effects of weathering and decay provide a constant source of reference. Small groups of related forms are hand-built simultaneously, the slow and contemplative pace of coiling allowing for considered developments and refinements to be made.

Stephen then completed a B.A.(Hons) degree in 3D Design specialising in Ceramics at the West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham in 1977. After gaining a post graduate A.T.C. at the Middlesex Poytechnic he combined teaching art with continuing to develop his own work. Glazing and firing methods are adapted to enhance the form and surface of each piece.
