On a studio visit to see sculptor Rachael Long as we prepared for our showcase - A FINE BALANCE - 6 weeks ago, we were fascinated to learn more about a scheme that she and her family have been involved with on their farm land that lies to the south of Norwich. She explained that they had been working with Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) and Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) since 2010.

A Fine Balance serves to alert us to our own social context and how significant that is in our outlook toward ‘the great outdoors’. Artists and makers like sculptor Dan David use current attitudes as well as depictions of the recent past that reveal our encounters with the natural landscape. It is through finding a variety of visualisations that we arrive at a greater understanding of the different claims made upon our immediate environment.

Seminal works by the celebrated British sculptor Anish Kapoor will go on show across the grounds and historic interiors of Houghton Hall in Norfolk for the exhibition Anish Kapoor at Houghton Hall, opening on 29 March 2020. We will showcase the work of new and established artists from across the eastern region in the stables.
