These mounted works are the second collection of porcelain recycled collages which are sourced from discarded earlier works so they can be revisited and have value. Porcelain paperclay, with coloured strata cast inclusions and a Dolomite glaze. Black Obeche wood float frame.
Kathryn Hearn is interested in the ‘make do and mend’ nature of utilitarian objects in our households, gardening and farming practices with its unacknowledged application of craft. Also low technology has a powerful impact on her, like the modest effectiveness of wedges in our lives. They have a strong craft currency in Japan where they are respected and celebrated, usually being highly refined. She is however not interested in perfection but deconstruction, making explicit the narrative of vessels landscape and attitudes of people.
She also builds assemblages exploring the re-use of unsuccessful or discarded porcelain elements, creating collage like wall pieces which are cut in the fired state and glazed together for another creative lease of life.
She creates vessels, objects and wall works that are sometimes functional or sculptural.
