Joni Smith
Poetics of Space, inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s book of the same name, is a thought-provoking artwork by Smith, created with acrylic ink on an OS map of Norwich. The piece explores the interplay between physical and psychological spaces by hand-cutting the map along its grid marks and rotating each segment, forming a visually disharmonic image. The dominant shapes of rivers and roads are painted over, emphasising their structure and movement, while challenging conventional perceptions of place and geography. This transformative approach reinterprets the map, inviting viewers to reconsider the spatial narratives we take for granted.
