Joni Smith
(can be shown landscape or portrait)
In Paths Otherwise Unseen, Smith repurposes cut-up data maps typically found in the introductory pages of school atlases—those detailing statistics like coffee production, birth rates, and death rates. Smith is particularly interested in deconstructing and reconfiguring this information to create a new, undecipherable version of reality. This work guides viewers on an alternative journey, inviting them to see the world through an obscured yet beautiful lens. Familiar places on the map are fragmented or merge with unknown territories, creating a vibrant and intriguing new perspective on reality despite the apparent disharmony.
