This was the first Le Corbusier building that I visited. This Unité d’Habitation (in Briey to the north east of France) had been saved by an association, and having met them, they told me that Peter Doig had been there after he had graduated, and painted the building in a series called ‘Log Cabins’ that had been shown in a retrospective at Tate Britain of his work, that I had seen and admired. He painted fleeting glimpses of the building seen through the trees that surrounded it. I wanted in my version to contrast the grid of the building with the almost frenzy of nature, and with lights on, domesticity of living.
