I had visited Firminy in central France, a World Heritage Site because of the Le Corbusier buildings there. Nearby towards Lyon is this Dominican Order priory by Le Corbuiser too, where you can stay overnight in its cells. A memorable experience, walking through its insides, sleeping in the meagreness of the cells and the inedible food. It’s located in a landscape, and seems to have landed almost as something from outer space, predator like perusing its surrounds from a high vantage. It was the qualities of the photograph and this interpretation that I wanted to explore in my painting, expanding the borders of my canvas to include context rather than focus on just exploring the buildings abstract qualities.
