Part of a collection of work under the title Collars, Cuffs and Crowns, this piece explores the themes of inheritance and gender. The collars and cuffs are suggestive of bonds and ties to the land as in slavery and serfdom with the crown obviously signifying the top of the hierarchy. Almost as a throwback to the medieval feudal system male primogeniture still exists today.
Here the seven sides of the piece represent the seven kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxons, of which East Anglia was a part. The crown is not meant to be worn but is more a representation of the seven kingdoms coming together to form the
Heptarchy.
