In this work, intricate folds transform Ariel maps of Europe, employing an origami-like technique. Assembled with precision, the maps are unified under a neon pink circle, symbolising encoded data. Yet, through semi-deconstruction, the work explores the constant interplay of encoding and decoding, reflecting the dynamic nature of information in our interconnected world. The folded landscapes invite viewers to ponder the layers of meaning embedded within, echoing the complex relationship between data and interpretation.
The intentional decision to leave loose ends is a nod to Smith’s background in textiles, creating a woven appearance that adds depth to the piece. The slow, methodical process of crafting Neon Cartographies pays homage to the tradition of slow-making in textiles, inviting viewers to contemplate the intricate interplay of forces shaping our world and the precarious equilibrium necessary for sustaining collective harmony amid the chaos of contemporary existence.
