Marianne Faithfull's new album features artwork by Colin Self
She Walks in Beauty has been produced by Warren Ellis 10 May, 2021Harriet Vyner of Cheerio, interviewed Marianne Faithful about her recent launch of "She Walks in Beauty". Produced with composer Warren Ellis, this draws on her passion for the poetry of Shelley, Keats, Byron, Wordsworth, Tennyson and Thomas Hood and features extra special appearances by Nick Cave, Brian Eno and Vincent Ségal. Not to mention artwork created by Colin Self, a long-time friend. We are selling limited edition prints of these illustrations at our next pop up at Houghton Hall, Rock Paper Scissors - opening 19 May -

Sarah Paramor's amazing basketry comes to Norfolk 7 May, 2021Sarah Paramor is the first artist/maker that C&C have invited to showcase her work as part of our look at the cultural sector on a national level. Sarah currently lives in Applecross, West Scotland and has exhibited nationally and internationally and is regular contributor to Craft Scotland. Spring Salon - #1
Living with art and the handmade 26 April, 2021We are publishing a series of images from collections we are currently putting together for clients. Here is the latest Spring Salon installation showing new work by Norwich based artists working with paper (Joni Smith and Ruth Howes) as well as Molly Thomson who creates these delicious constructed boards made unctious by the use of poured paint. -
C&C's next exhibition will be Rock Paper Scissors
8 April 2021Contemporary and Country’s exhibition Rock, Paper, Scissors encompasses art and handmade objects fashioned with the process of their making in mind. It will run alongside the exhibition by Tony Cragg, opening at Houghton Hall, Norfolk on 19 May and closing 26 September, 2021. Tickets to enter the Houghton Hall Estate are on sale from 19 April (entrance to the Stables will be part of the entrance fee) -

Based in North Norfolk this well established artist continues to produce the most beautiful paintings continuing her desire to capture and represent glimpses of the Norfolk landscape in all its colour, light and shade. -
Spotlight: Katharina Klug
Ceramic Alchemy Feb 21 2021The hand-drawn lines on Katharina Klug's ceramics make the work lively, rough, immediate and unique and preserve the moment of mark- making. Inspiration comes from little snippets of observation in her environment. Lines are jumping out at her in almost anything – stripes on cloth, wires and cables, plants and grasses, architecture and streets to name a few. -
Creative moves for 2021
12 January 2021We are delighted to continue to work with a selection of established and new artists and makers in 2021. We are also working hard in reaching out to new creative talent from our area, east of England. Some are struggling to keep up their practice under the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions but many are working on creative expressions of hope. -
Supporting fundraiser for East Anglia Children's Hospice (EACH)
24 December 2020Having supported East Anglia's Children's Hospices for a number of years for the Nook Campaign, through to on-site fundraising during our 2018 season at Houghton Hall, we are delighted now to have been able to help source artworks from artists' we work with to donate towards their next fundraising auction to be held in February / March 2021. -

All smoke, no mirrors
11 December, 2020We are delighted to be able to offer a small number of Maria Pavledis' "Owl Sanctuary" prints this year - from a limited edition of 100, all signed by the artist. The print is taken from one of her smoke drawings created by the transfer of carbon from the burning flame of a candle held close to the surface of the paper. -
On the first day...
24 November 2020Pick up this limited edition set of laser cut decorations depicting the 12 Days of Christmas by Norwich based artist Ruth Howes. Ruth studied Fine Art, specialising in sculpture and over the years has shifted to painting and illustration in her work. All her work has the paper cutting process at its heart. -

Marianne Faithful and Colin Self
20 October, 2020Colin Self has been a long standing friend of Marianne Faithfull since they first met in the 1960s. Colin has provided some of his wonderfully lyrical and dreamlike landscapes to illustrate the cover and booklet accompanying Marianne's next CD when she will be narrating verse by England's greatest poets. -
Debby Besford's Roller Skaters
Portraits in motion 19 October, 2020Delighted to see this new series of work by Norfolk based photographic artis, Debby Besford. Bought up in Great Yarmouth, Debby herself was a champion of roller skating as a teenager and knows all too well about the community of competitors seeking to excel at this sport. -
Peter Wylie at the Royal Academy Summer Show 2020
24 September, 2020Peter was born in Lowestoft and attained a BA Honours in Fine Art from Canterbury College of Art 1978 and later an MA Fine Art Printmaking from Camberwell College, London 2017. He has shown his work in London at the Royal Academy, Whitechapel Art Gallery, Royal-Overseas-League and in China, France and Cyprus. -
Keron Beattie nominated for Holt Art Prize
17 September, 2020We are delighted that Keron Beattie, currently showing in our pop up in the stables at Houghton Hall, has been nominated for the Sir John Hurt and Sworders Art Prize, Holt Festival this year. Keron gained a First Class BA (Hons) in Contemporary Art and Design (2016) and a MA Fine Art with Distinction (2018) from NUA. His work for A Fine Balance is concerned with the natural world under pressure including disconnection with nature and natural cycles. -

From beautiful design for the home with Katharina Klug's ceramic creations; to amazing handmade paper cut works by Ruth Howes; to breathtaking large photographic art by Gareth Hacon and new painted landscapes from Kate Giles. We are also pleased to have installed new sculptures by Jonathan Clarke. -

12 September, 2020Houghton Hall is one of Norfolk’s finest houses and provides a wonderful setting for displaying large-scale installations by leading contemporary artists within the garden and park. The Anish Kapoor exhibition of outdoor sculpture at Houghton Hall will be on until 1 November. A Fine Balance accompanies the main exhibition and shares the same opening times and dates. What and where is Springs Fireplace Road?
2 August, 2020Springs Fireplace Road is the title of the group of etchings by Colin Self and printed by master printer Maurice Payne at Editions Alecto between 1968 and 1971. We are showing this incredible print edition at A Fine Balance, in the stables at Houghton Hall. Payne has printed for Hockney for over 40 years and it was at a chance meeting with Self in the 1990s at a David Hockney private view, that reconnected them. -
Anish Kapoor due to open at Houghton Hall on 12 July
27 June, 2020This will be our fourth pop-up exhibition of art and handmade objects by artists and makers from East Anglia held in The Stables at Houghton Hall. The exhibition will feature recent work by more than 40 artists and makers who explore narratives that reference our landscape, the creatures that share it, natural materials and processes, and how mankind’s activities affect and influence it. The fine balance these artists seek is often a moment, or a tipping point that brings attention to an aspect of our surroundings that has been overlooked or undervalued. -
Art lovers look eastward as "Anish Kapoor has moved matters on"
9 June, 2020The opening of this major exhibition of sculpture by Anish Kapoor - some being seen for the very first time in public... is a real coup for the east of England and huge credit to the vision of Lord Cholmondeley. As john Snow put it in his broadcast interview where he commented that in the light of everything going on Anish Kapoor has moved on the discussion surrounding the place of art in a time of pandemic and in an atmosphere where so many strive to address issues raised by historic slavery and the Black Lives Matter movement. -

Colin Self is born and bred in Norfolk while painter and printer Peter Wylie was born in Lowestoft and continues his fascination with the Suffolk landscape and the North Sea. All find ways of articulating a sense of belonging and have uncovered and maintained a deep connections with our region. -

Heather Connor, textile artists and emboiderer 6 April, 2020Heather Connor lives with learning difficulties that have made it impossible for her to find regular employment. To generate an income she has has been making these beautiful cushions since 2016 and been helped by her family and friends to sell them to build her own support network. -

She explained that they had been working with Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) and Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) since 2010. -

5 July, 2019Molly Thomson's choices are particular. They seem steeped in memory, often triggering deep-set associations for the viewer of long forgotten favourite things like a leather jacket, a much loved car, a piece of Tupperware, a bar of soap or some kitchen cabinets. The shape of the panel underscores the direction that the memory travels. -
Birdflight Books Return to Houghton Hall
Judith Ellis' evocative books are handmade and bear witness to teh beauty and fragility of birds 2 July, 2019Oystercatchers fly along a beach, and Swifts swoop over rooftops. Gannets fly fast over the sea and Redshanks call over the marshes. The Birdflight series of artistʼs books can each be made to commission, they are all individually hand painted no two will ever be quite the same. Bridget Heriz – bringing forms to life
Creating objects filled with emotions: joy, fear, stillness, movement, agitation and excitement 15 May, 2019Bridget Heriz trained at Goldsmiths College and Ravensbourne College of Art and Design (1973-77), after which she returned to Suffolk to work at Clock House Fine Art Studios. She moved to Great Yarmouth in 2002. After a period working with traditional methods to evolve an earthy and spirited approach to figurative sculpture, Bridget has returned to experimenting with constructions using wire and card or balsa wood. -
Brüer Tidman takes part in FESTIVAL 2019

When Colin Self travelled across America with David Hockney and friends 9 June, 2017Colin Self attended the Royal College of Art (RCA) in the early sixties – as Pop Art emerged in London. He exhibited at the influential Robert Fraser Gallery, along side Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton and Clive Barker. He sees potential in the everyday objects that surround us and calls himself a ‘hunter’, seeking out connections between objects he has selected out from the detritus of mass consumption. -

The Cutting Edge
New work by Joni Smith and Ruth Howes 2 May, 2019We are showcasing the work of artists who employ paper cutting at the core of their practice. Both are Norwich based. Joni Smith bases her work on mapping and topography and has produced intricate cut townscapes of Wells, King's Lynn as well as Italy and Spain incorporating knotted ropes. Ruth Howes cuts paper plans of buildings - Holkham and Houghton Halls feature strongly and her cut schematic of the Houses of Parliament features paper figures jumping off the terrace into the Thames. -
Keron Beattie shows with us for the first time
15 April, 2019Keron Beattie gained a First Class BA (Hons) in Contemporary Art and Design (2016) and a MA Fine Art with Distinction (2018) from Norwich University of the Arts (NUA). His work is concerned with drawing elements together, reversing fragmentation, remaking and bringing a sense of wholeness to disparate materials, changing or transforming them into objects that display their component parts without apology. -

Jonathan Clarke joins us for FESTIVAL 2019
Welcoming Jonathan to show with us at Houghton Hall in our pop up called Festival 21 March, 2019Jonathan Clarke was born in 1961 in Suffolk, UK, where he continues to work today. At the age of 16 he took up an apprenticeship with his father, the sculptor Geoffrey Clarke (RA). He has works on commissions across the country including Colchester, Ely Cathedral, St James' Square, London and Southwell Minster. -

The paintings of Lorraine Bewick 20 August, 2018Lorraine Bewick has taken tried and tested techniques in the tradition of figurative landscape painting and applied them to her own perspective of the English landscape. Based in North Norfolk her interest in interpreting Norfolk’s expansive skies and coastal reaches as liminal space treads a path mapped out by acknowledged masters of the genre, such as John Robert Cozens and JMW Turner. -

The art of Amanda Sutton 15 August, 2018Amanda Sutton creates coastal landscapes on glass, using techniques she has developed from Verre églomisé. Encompassing several techniques that include etching, applying metal leaf, painting the backs of mirrors, Sutton uses the warmth of distressed gold and silver leaf to impart the fleeting tonal lighting and reflective qualities of sea, sky and coastal flats. -
A bird's eye view
The beautiful abstract landscapes by Norfolk based artist, Linda Jamieson 2 August, 2018Linda Jamieson was born and spent her childhood in Norfolk . She was trained at St. Martins school of Art, and studied further at Heatherlys and with Francis Pratt in France and Norfolk. She worked for many years in the field of textile design in London, France and Italy, and also as a consultant for interior design. She now divides her time between her studios in Norfolk and London and has also exhibited in both places. -
Putting Pencil to Paper
Introducing Norwich based artist Andrea Girling 30 July, 2018Andrea Girling embraces the tradition of landscape in the Romantic period, re-working original 18th and 19th century engravings. An engraving of the Corra Lynn Waterfall on the River Clyde is her starting point. The falls were painted by JMW Turner circa 1840. By alternating between digital imaging and freehand drawing technique, Girling makes her process part of the final drawn image. Each drawing takes weeks to prepare, meticulously built up, including the faults incurred during its development to create something slowly and entirely new. -

The Art oif Pandora Mond 29 July, 2017We are thrilled to be able to show Pandora Mond's latest and larger canvases including her new exoplanet series, resulting from Pandora's collaboration with the Astrophysics Department of Exeter University - giving shape, colour and form to data collected from their observations of astronomical phenomenon lying beyond the visual reach of our known universe. -
Introducing Joni Smith
Paper cut art 24 July, 2017Joni Smith builds fictitious worlds using everyday objects. She works mostly with maps, reordering them into new worlds. Before assembling the work Joni devises a set of rules to follow & from then on becomes machine-like in her adherence to them. Decisions are made, but not ones that compromise the rule set. -

From seashells, hand-turned wood and ceramics, to wool, seaweed and glass. Here we are highlighting those among our exhibitors who create the most beautiful vessels for the home. -
One month and counting
Looking forward to the opening of our next pop up on 29 March 26 February, 2018Just over a month to go before we open our pop up shop in the Stables at Houghton Hall from Sunday 25 March, ending 29 July 2018. We will feature a selection of new work by 40+ of Norfolk’s finest craftspeople and artists from across generations, a few from the wider area of East Anglia – many showing with us for the first time. It will coincide with the Damien Hirst exhibition (March 25 – July 15, 2018). -
Margaret Mellis - pioneer and mentor
Discovering more about one of Damien Hirst's early inspirations 15 February, 2018We are showing four works by the late Margaret Mellis at our Houghton Hall Pop-Up event this year. She concluded a productive artistic career based in Suffolk, where she brought order to chaos in her playful assemblages. Before her death in 2009, Damien Hirst, an early admirer of her work remarked in 2001, “Why hasn’t someone noticed Margaret Mellis’ contribution to British art?” On this evidence it is time the British art establishment addressed his challenge. -
Introducing Tim Plunkett
Using sustainable wood from Norfolk to create the beautiful and functional 15 January, 2018Tim Plunkett has a BSc in Environmental Science and involvement in direct action opposing the destruction of ancient forests and cultures. No wonder then that it is important to Tim that all his work is made from locally sourced wood. Entirely self taught through trial (and often painful error) he strives to produce elegant, functional pieces with graceful uncluttered lines, for the kitchen and table. -
Meet Dan Meek
Stonecarver 4 January, 2018Dan Meek trained in architectural stonemasonry, carving and letter cutting at Bath – he qualified in 1995 – and has worked on many of the country’s major restoration projects, including St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. -

Fren Ingrams showing at Houghton Hall 30 June, 2017Born in 1964, Fred Ingrams studied at Camberwell and St. Martins Schools of Art. He painted above the Coach & Horses pub in Soho for 10 years. In 1998 he moved to Norfolk where has spent the last seven years painting The Fens. We are offering 3 of his recent new works at Houghton Hall. -

Crochetdermy Shortlisted for John Ruskin Prize
16 May, 2017Shauna Richardson's new crochetdermy piece called "The Wolf and the Lamb" has been shortlisted for the prestigious John Ruskin prize 2017. Winners will be announced on Tuesday 20th June at the Millennium Gallery, Sheffield. The shortlist exhibition, Master of all Trades, will be on display from 21st June – 8th October 2017. -

Richard Long's EarthSky Emerges
12 March, 2017Richard Long’s work is rooted in his deep affinity and engagement with nature, developed during solitary walks. His new pieces in the grounds of Houghton Hall using local carrstone, trees from the Estate and slate accompany the permanent Long sculpture, Full Moon Circle, which was commissioned for Houghton in 2003.
